How to verify the default SharePoint Permissions are set properly or someone made changes ?

Navigate to your SharePoint site root > Click on the gear icon Site Settings > Site Information > View all site settings > Site Permission


Click on Permission levels 

You can see the various permission levels and the permissions that are set for each



Make sure the needed options are selected

I had a scenario - I gave a group contribute permission and they are not able to create files or update files. Sync from one drive also stopped working. Spend a good amount of time troubleshooting and couldn't find any issue.

Finally, I came to the Permission level section and noticed Edit Items permission was not selected
